World MX: The French Grand Prix Brings A Refreshing Change
7 Days ago
Wow, after the British Grand Prix a fortnight ago, this round has got to be one of the most exciting rounds yet this year. The weather forecast on Friday was sketchy to say the least, and when flight BA 7987 turned south for France, it certainly looked like most of the Grands Prix this year bar one so far - rain. With some tailwind, the Boeing 737 turned south west ten minutes early, descended through the broken cloud cover and neatly into the capital of Aquitaine.

World MX: British Grand Prix Blasts Mallory Park
10 June 2008
When it was first announced that the British Motocross Grand Prix was going to Mallory Park in Leicestershire, I was sceptical. Mallory Park is after all recognised more for its road-race circuit than motocross. Of course, there is space for a motocross track because a track already exists, but my concerns were more about the camping and the all-too-notorious traffic. After several phone calls between the promoter RHL Activities and myself, which promised that traffic and camping were taken care of, I felt somewhat more positive. And then, months later, on Saturday the last day of May, I find myself cautiously driving down Kirkby Mallory's Church Road to Mallory Park.

World MX: Damp Italian Grand Prix Delivers Surprise Results
26 May 2008
When you think about Italy you probably think about Roman ruins, old palazzos and cobbled streets. And wine and pasta and sunshine, fashion, fast cars and fast bikes. And hard-baked, sun-burnt ground. Not sand. Mantova, or Mantua in the local Lombardian dialect, is a fantastic old city in the south east corner of Lombardia, and it hosts the annual Mantova Starcross, one of the three or so races that comprise the pre-season in motocross. The track is in walking distance from Mantova's second-most famous landmark, the Palazzo Te, and it is, quite literally, Italy's sandbox.

British MX: Summer Weather Spells Midway Point For The Maxxis
09 May 2008
It's barely into May and the Maxxis British Motocross Championship has reached its midway point already. Round four of the championship, held at the Cadders Hill sand track just outside the village of Lyng in Norfolk over the Early May Bank Holiday weekend, was a relief to all riders as it heralded the beginning of summer with temperatures in the twenties and sunshine. Considering that Lyng usually gets the cold and dreary round in early March, the date was well-chosen this year, and to good effect too. The spectator turnout was satisfactory, definitely better than other rounds have experienced so far.

World MX: Blazing Action Ignites Championship In Portugal
02 May 2008
What a difference a week makes. Last week it was rain and mud, this week it is literally summer weather that belongs in July. But – who are we to complain? Better this than pouring rain, miserable riders and miserable spectators. Águeda, a sleepy market town in the north-west of Portugal and a scant hour from the hustle and bustle of Porto, hosts the third round of the World Motocross Championship, and the complete turnabout of the weather pleasantly surprises everyone. Hot and dry from mid-week onwards, the temperatures peak on Saturday where the mercury hits 32 degrees centigrade and prompts the use of anything that can keep the temperatures down.

World MX: Mud Mayhem In Spain
25 April 2008
Spain is the proverbial country of sun. The running joke around the world motocross paddock though is that when it comes to Bellpuig in the heart of Catalunya, you pack wellies, raincoat, and extra clothes, not t-shirts, shorts and flip-flops. This year the weather again held true to that. Friday evening was a glimpse of what was to come on Sunday – rain. Saturday dawned to sunny conditions, but the locals, knowing the fickleness of the weather, forecast yet another rainy Grand Prix.

British MX : More Mud For The Maxxis Championship At Torrington
17 April 2008
Mud, mud, mud and more mud. That's exactly what awaited all at Waggadon Farm just outside Great Torrington in Devon this past weekend when the Maxxis British Motocross Championship made its third stop of the season. Rains earlier in the week prompted persons close to ACU Events to request teams to delay their arrival until late Saturday afternoon to allow the field used as a paddock to dry out.

World MX: Wet Weather Starts The Championship Off With A Cracker
16 April 2008
"Welkom bij Eurocircuit" - That's what the sign says at the gate. Valkenswaard, a vibrant town twenty odd miles from Ground Zero of motocross, the Kempen in Belgium, and 80 miles from Germany, Brussels and Amsterdam, is the traditional season opener for the World Motocross Grand Prix, and this year again it hosts the world's most prestigious motocross championship opener. The weather is as could be expected considering the wave of low pressure systems that have chased across much of the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe – cold, wet, and nasty.

Merry Christmas In March - Or, Easter Weekend Brings Snow To The Maxxis
28 March 2008
"Merry Christmas!" It sounds through my car window as I pull into my parking spot at the second round of the Maxxis British Motocross Championship in Kent this past weekend. As much as that was meant to be a joke, you could swear that it is December 25 because the whole track is thinly covered in the white stuff, with the heavens opening up to chuck some more of it down. But no, it's Easter Sunday, it is March 23, and white Christmas is three months late.

Sun Shines On Maxxis British Motocross Championship Opener

Donington. The name evokes memories of MotoGP, not motocross. Yet it is at Donington Park in Derbyshire that the Maxxis British Motocross Championship starts its 2008 run. In 2007, Donington Park joined a long list of venues in the United Kingdom with a World Motocross Grand Prix pedigree, and although spectators panned it for its lack of atmosphere and lack of access, the annual Motocross of Nations will be held at the same location, and, to give the track a practice run, the season opener of the top British championship has moved here.

British MX - The Season Starts Off With A Bang
04 March 2008 | 6 Comments
For decades Hawkstone has been one of the icons in British motocross and this year, the tenth anniversary of the Hawkstone International and the eighty-first of the Salop Motor Club, again has brought a lot of glamour to the iconic Shropshire location. And Mother Nature has smiled too; the weather is quite the reverse of the year previous: cold, crisp, but sunny. The MX2 class of the event is so oversubscribed that the club runs two MX2 timed qualifying sessions of thirty riders each instead of one for forty riders.
