Can Luggage Stay On The S1000RR? Yes When It's Ventura

So, a long weekend trip to Le Mans for the 24 hour bike race is booked and the new BMW S1000RR is sitting happily in my garage. The guys are all excited about the trip and the weather is looking like it's going to be great, but hang on I don't have any luggage apart from my rucksack to take my stuff! I contact BMW to see what they have to offer and also Bagster. BMW's offering was tailor made for the bike but fixed to the rear seat and was not of any substantial size so the rucksack would be needed as well, Bagster/Baglux had nothing to offer for the new S1000RR, then I get an email from a friend asking if I had seen the latest offering from Ventura?

I looked at the pictures and liked what I saw. Long story short I picked up my system in time, only just mind, to fix it to the bike. The installation was as simple as making a cuppa. It took me about 5 mins to fit, with just 4 parts to the rack system plus the bag. When fitted it was as secure and as stable as if it was manufactured by BMW as part of the bike.

Rack

 BagRails

The bag is a 51 litre Aero-Spada VII and swallowed up all my equipment and clothing with ease. By simply sliding the bag over the rear rail and clipping it through the rack the bag was easy to attach and remove without any hassle. With the rack and bag now installed I stood back to admire the job I had done and realised that the bag sat exactly over the rear seat, making the weight distribution similar to a passenger so should make the bike stable on the move. It was. You didn't even know the system was there, until you tried to get on and off the bike, ha-ha I kicked it a few times forgetting it was there.

For all its fantastic benefits and features there are a couple of things I need to point out about the bag though. It's not waterproof for a start so you would need to buy the storm cover, which at £25 is not a huge price to pay but when you consider the whole system costs around £250 you would think they would include it in the price. The side pockets are great for holding tyre weld or chain wax, if you could get them in!! The size of the pocket isn't the problem but the opening is a little restricted to get the cans in.

All in all I would highly recommend the system for its ease of installation and the fact you can happily ride, at speed, knowing that the bag is not going anywhere. They recommend you don't exceed 80mph for obvious legal reasons but I can confirm that you can double that speed and still not be worried about it taking a swift exit from behind you. You can leave the rails attached to your bike and replace the rack with a smaller Sports rack or even a grab rail and also replace the bag with a smaller Sports Pack. The larger bag can also be added to if you decide you want to tour Europe for a couple of weeks and need more than a long weekend set of clothes.

Well done Ventura, a definite winner in the luggage department. Go take a look at their website http://www.ventura-bike.co.uk/

Here's a video showing the installation onto a typical sportsbike, a GSX-R, although other bikes are featured in the various videos on YouTube.

The Ventura kit is very well made and very well designed. After using a kit on the GSX-R for the Italy trip last year, I still use it pretty much every day around London as well. Despite the obvious extra weight on the back, it really does feel like you don't have anything on you, which is obviously different to a rucksack.

I use it around town as you can reverse the mount plate and have it sticking out from the rear of the bike so I can have a pillion on the bike as well, i.e. both our daily gear and us on there. No problem! It's tough as well, withstood a crash recently :-/

The Ventura is a brilliant bit of kit. The ability to use it both ways is exellent (Bag over pillion seat or bag over tail light) I put my gear in a bin liner inside and put another bin liner over the top in heavy rain.

I find the kit works better if as you say Trackday reverse the carrier have the bag actually sitting on pillion seat, That way you get extra room for a ruck sack, wet weather gear. Also it takes the weight off the carrier and places it wear a pillions bottom would be. Best kit ever!

Come to think about it the rack is on the wrong way around ! And I ment to say "where" the pillion sits
